When traveling in India, you are subject to local laws and restrictions. Some regulations are highly strict, particularly regarding tech gear and communication devices.
⚠️ Satellite Phones, GPS, and Drones Prohibited
In accordance with Indian legislation, it is strictly forbidden to import or use satellite phones or drones anywhere in the country.
- This ban also applies to standalone GPS devices with satellite communication features, which are considered sensitive equipment (especially in border regions).
- The Risks: Non-compliance carries severe penalties, including device confiscation, heavy fines, or even imprisonment. Simply carrying the item in your luggage is a punishable offense.
- ✔️ What is allowed: Standard smartphones with their regular navigation apps (Google Maps, offline Google Maps, etc.).
🔌 Power Outlets & Adapters
Power plug types and voltages vary across the country. While some outlets are compatible with European plugs, travelers from the US, UK, and other regions will require a power adapter. You can verify your specific device compatibility prior to departure on specialized guides like Power Plugs & Sockets.
📱 Network, Wi-Fi, and Electricity
- Connectivity in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and South India: The cellular network is reliable, and Wi-Fi is readily available in most hotels. To stay connected on the go, we highly recommend purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport.
- The Himalayan & Ladakh Exception: Cellular networks are highly unpredictable here. Because Ladakh is a heavily militarized border zone next to China, there is no phone signal or Wi-Fi outside of the capital city, Leh.
- Power & Hot Water: Electricity and hot water can be sporadic in remote mountain areas. While hotels use backup generators during power cuts, they are run sporadically and are frequently turned off overnight. Enjoy it as a perfect opportunity to truly disconnect!
🏨 Hotel Information & Travel Advice
- Linens and Towels: No need to overpack your bags—all your accommodations provide full linens, including clean sheets and bath towels.
- Two nights in tents are scheduled for the Himalayan Expedition!
- Please note that hot water is not always available in this remote region. We do our utmost to optimize your comfort, but the authenticity of the Himalayas sometimes means rustic facilities
