While traveling to India, you are subject to Indian laws and their restrictions. Certain objects such as satellite phones, drones, etc. are subject to regulations under penalty of a fine. If you have any doubts as you're packing your bags, it pays to do a little research. Know before you go!
Riders from America or other countries may require an adapter.
The telephone network is generally good except in the Himalayas, in particular in the Ladakh region: outside the capital Leh, no telephone goes through, and satellite telephones are prohibited because we are in a militarized zone on the border with China. Electricity and hot water are available in most areas, but not all. Availability can be especially sporadic in the most remote areas. Generators are used to compensate for the poor electrical network during cuts, but they are often started up sporadically and sometimes turned off at night.
WIFI is available in the majority of hotels in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and South India. In Ladakh and the Himalayas in general, do not expect to have WIFI at the stages. For addicts, take a sim card when you arrive at the airport.
Satellite Phones and GPS Devices Banned in India: In accordance with Indian law, it is strictly forbidden to import or use a satellite phone within the country. This ban also applies to certain standalone GPS devices equipped with satellite communication functions, which are considered sensitive equipment, especially in regions near borders. Failure to comply with this regulation may result in severe penalties: confiscation of the device, heavy fines, or even imprisonment. Even unintentional use or simple possession can be problematic. We therefore ask you not to bring this type of equipment on your trip. Standard smartphones with GPS apps (Google Maps, etc.) are permitted.
We advise you to visit the website of the US State Department or gov.uk website which provides travel advice for India. You will find general recommendations according to the areas visited but also current information which may be useful. For riders from other countries, please consult with your local government for the most current travel information.
